The Community Garden Project

Durham Police Office, 46 Sherburn Road, Gilesgate, Durham DH1 2JR

Our Community Garden Project is a calm, welcoming space designed to support wellbeing, learning, and connection. This fully accessible sensory and therapeutic garden includes raised beds, as well as dedicated areas for growing vegetables and flowers, creating an environment that everyone can enjoy.

The garden offers a wonderful opportunity for individuals to develop practical skills and confidence through hands-on activities. From planting and growing to maintaining the space, participants are supported to build independence and learn valuable life skills in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

A key part of our vision is for the vegetable garden to support independent living sessions, while also giving back to the local community. We hope to grow enough produce to share with elderly residents and local food banks, helping to make a positive difference beyond our service.

The site also includes a large, heated cabin, providing a comfortable indoor space for gardening projects, learning, and group sessions throughout the year. This makes the garden a versatile and inclusive environment where people can take part in meaningful activities whatever the weather.

At its heart, the Community Garden Project is about more than gardening-it’s about building confidence, encouraging independence, and creating a sense of pride, purpose, and belongin
